12 Years a Slave poster controversy update: Behold the revised poster featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor

Turns out BIM Distribuzione developed the controversial 12 Years posters featuring Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender without authority from the studio. The company recently issued an apology along with a revised poster prominently featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor. The New York Times Artsbeat blog has the scoop: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/27/distributor-apologizes-for-movie-posters-ignoring-chiwetel-ejiofor/?_r=1#!

I am thoroughly behind the new version, and applaud the studio for putting the emphasis where it belongs. Not only was the unauthorized version offensive to many people, it did not strongly communicate the point of the story. And finally, the old poster was not even well done, whether or not Brad Pitt’s face was on it. It looked thrown together hastily. This new poster gives the star his due, has energy and a disturbing feel (which it should) and with a more powerful graphic may likely bring in a wider audience. I repudiate my earlier defense of the Pitt poster, and feel I have learned something through thus whole discussion. Absolutely, this new poster is right on.

Tough to do a 180 sometimes, but disastrous personally and professionally if you can’t change positions when the situation calls for it. Thanks! 🙂
